It seems that the green signal is fast approaching. By 2009, De La Salle University-Manila will be having its seventh college once the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Supreme Court of the Philippines give their go signal on the submitted proposal to establish the DLSU-College of Law. In an article in 2401, the official newsletter of DLSU, it was revealed that the proposal has already been submitted to CHED.
Fast facts about the news:
- The College of Law will be positioned as a school that “actively engages in the promotion, protection and preservation of human rights and environmental laws.”
- Atty. Jose Manuel Diokno, son of a Lasallian and Senator Jose Diokno is appointed as Dean of the College.
- Br. Armin Luistro earlier disclosed this plan during the Faculty Assembly at Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel last May 22.
- On the first year, the university will start with no more than three classes or 90 students.
Of course, there will be implications. These are my take:
- What will happen to the Juris Doctor - Masters in Business Administration (JD-MBA) which is a joint program of the DLSU Graduate School of Business and FEU Institute of Law?
- The DLSU Student Council will or should have reorganizations in the succeeding years to accommodate the student body of the new college. The SC may be stronger because of the presence of a new college.
- Where will the La Salle Institute for Governance (LSIG), Commercial Law Department of the College of Business and Economics, and other offices (which may be affected) after the implementation?
- How will the first batch of DLSU future lawyers perform in the Bar Examinations?
- Will the Bar Examinations be still held at the campus? Or will the Supreme Court change venues?
The future seems to be exciting for La Salle.
